Buses are for everyone

Buses are for everyone

EDITOR:

Why would anyone outside of Youngstown want bus service? Are you kidding? Most of us, at some point in our lives, will be too old to drive, but not too old to retain as much of our independence as possible. Most of us will not live close to our children or grandchildren. Even those of us lucky enough to have family members living close would prefer to live our lives on our schedule, not theirs. We would prefer to shop, visit our old friends, go out to eat when it is convenient for us. Most would prefer not to impose our schedule on others, or have their schedules imposed on us. A countrywide transit could do just that.

For Mayor Smith of Sebring to state in a letter to the editor that he is opposing the sales tax and to compare it to the Mill Creek Park property tax is like comparing apples and oranges. It is not a property tax. It is a sales tax and is 1 penny for every four dollars.

WRTA is not reinventing the wheel in Mahoning County. County wide transit is successful throughout Ohio. With the passage of the quarter-percent sales tax (Issue One) public transportation will be available to all residents of Mahoning County. A countywide small bus, door-to-door service will be available, with a reservation for a ride 24 hours ahead in all areas. New routing will be made available on fixed routes in Austintown, Boardman, Campbell, and Struthers. Saturday service will come back and a new night service will be established.

Most importantly, without a viable transportation system we will lose opportunities for new jobs. Any employer looking to relocate to Mahoning County will consider the availability of having public transportation to its work site in their decision to locate here.

Remembering the Clintons

EDITOR:

How soon that the people of Ohio forget.

When Clinton ran for president the first time, he promised health care for everyone, better jobs for people, Hillary even promised she’s help her husband get the health care we all need. They also promised that they would come back to the Youngstown area if he was elected. He’d help Youngstown’s declining jobs. Well after he got into office they did nothing, they wouldn’t even come back to the Youngstown area until they ran again for their last four years. They had eight years, when they left office, they hadn’t done anything for Medicare, jobs, health care or education. We’re still in the same shape.

I’m a Republican, but this year I will vote for Barack Obama. I like his views, and I think he could do our country some real good. He deserves to have a go of it. I think we have had enough of the Clintons to last a lifetime. Plus it was the Clintons who signed the treaty for our company to go elsewhere.

My husband is truly better off today than what it was during the Clinton years in office. He makes a lot more money. Thank you, President Bush.

A helping hand in Hubbard

EDITOR:

I would like to take a moment to let the residents of Hubbard know about the generosity of Henry Nemenz, owner of our local IGA.

Mr. Nemenz has gone above and beyond the call. He has supported our school each time we asked; and each time he has given far more than we had expected. In today’s economy, we might not have been able to have had some of the events we have had without his extreme generosity.

His employees also go the extra mile to make sure we have everything we need, often calling to check and recheck the order to make sure it is correct.

It is nice to know that there is someone who believes in supporting our local children and does so time and time again with genuine generosity and asks for nothing in return.
