Hall of Fame for Cardinal Mooney banquet scheduled for March 2


Jonelle Lynn Austin (class of 1988), track: The first and only female athlete from Cardinal Mooney to win an individual award in the state track meet when she won the 300 meter hurdles in a school-record time of 42.01 seconds. In 1988, she won both the sectional and regional meets … participated in track at McComb University and later coached at East High and Campbell Memorial.

Terry Bury (’77), basketball: All-SVC, All-Diocese, and high school All–American while at Cardinal Mooney, averaging 16 points per game. … Also excelled at track and softball, earning All-SVC track honors. … Was recipient of first full women’s scholarship to Gannon University.

Dennis Carney (’66), contributor: Three-year letter winner in track, placing first in the pole vault at the City Series meet in 1966. He held the school record for years. … Started Mooney’s girls soccer program in 1991 and coached the team for 11 years. Led the team to six SVC titles, four Diocesan crowns and one county championship. He had two undefeated seasons and coached the Youngstown all–star team eight times and helped found the Youngstown Area Coaches’ Association. Nine of his teams ended up with winning seasons.

David “Juice” Coleman (’87), football: A standout at tailback and remains one of the school’s all-time leading rushers. Named All-SVC, All-NEO and all-state as a senior and selected for the North-South game. … He also earned two letters in track and later played football at the University of Pittsburgh, where he started in the defensive backfield for two years and was a three-year letter winner.

James “Jaime” Fortune (’79), football: A three-year performer in three different sports, including linebacker. Earned All–SVC, All–NEO, and All–Ohio honors as a senior, and honorable mention high school All–American. He attended the University of Louisville before transferring to Golden West Junior College where he earned all-conference MVP on defense.

Maribeth Kondela Petrus (’91), golf: Her 44.1 average as a senior still ranks among the school’s all-time best. … Selected to the All-SVC team as a junior and senior, and led the girls team to the state tournament. Named the school’s golfer of the year as a senior.

Tom Landers (’74), contributor: Was 18-3 as a senior in singles and named to the All-Diocesan team. Led the way in the construction of Mooney’s tennis facility and has served as assistant coach for both the boys and girls teams.

Charles L. Marlowe (’91), football: Led the Cardinals to the state semifinals as a senior and was named All–SVC and all–state honors. … Still holds Mooney’s single season reception and yardage records and is third in career receptions and yardage. Later played at Kansas State where he was twice named all-conference as a defensive back.

Dave Nigro (’74), basketball: A three-year starter at point guard, he led Mooney to the Class AAA district title in 1973. He was named to the All-SVC and All–Diocesan teams and finished his career ranked No. 6 on the school’s all-time list in scoring.

Carl A. Pelini (’83), football: Lettered three years and was starter for two of them and played on two state championship teams. He was All–SVC, All–NEO and all-state in 1982. Later played at Columbia University before embarking on a coaching career. Today he is an assistant at the University of Nebraska.

Julie Testa Fire (’91), softball/basketball: Won four letters in softball (and was named All-SVC four times) and three letters in basketball. She was twice named All-SVC and selected for the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association Schoolgirl Classic. Later played both sports at Thiel College and was a four-time all-conference shortstop.

John Young (’68), football: Helped Mooney to City Series championships in 1966-67 as a center. He was an inside linebacker and named All–City, All–Diocese and All–Northeast Ohio, and received honorable mention all–state. Later played at Akron and later coached on state championship programs at Mooney and Brookfield.
