WARREN — The Committee to Save Warren G. Harding High School will have a public meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Sunrise Inn, 510 E. Market St. The citizens committee was formed to preserve the school when it is vacated and students are transferred to a new high school in the fall.

Driver dies in crash

NORTH LIMA — A 22-year-old Austintown man died Friday morning after losing control of his 2003 Honda Civic and hitting the back end of an Ohio Department of Transportation salt truck on state Route 11 southbound, just north of state Route 46, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield post. He was identified by the patrol as Rodney A. Van Meter Jr. of Kirk Road. The patrol said the crash happened at 8:47 a.m. just south of the rest area in Beaver Township when the Honda went off the right side of the road, spun and struck the ODOT salt spreader.

Meeting on electricity

HOWLAND — Township trustees will meet with a representative of the Ohio Consumers’ Council at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the township administration building, 205 Niles-Cortland Road. The public is invited. The meeting concerns how to effectively control the cost of electricity as the utility will be deregulated at the end of the year. The council believes that changes must be made in the pending legislation to give consumers protection and safeguards against high prices.

Beatitude House funds

WARREN — U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, is scheduled to present a $196,000 check to Beatitude House at 6:45 p.m. Sunday. The presentation will be made at Auzilio’s Banquet Center during the annual Beatitude House Cornerstones Dinner. The money will fund transitional housing for homeless women with children.

Women’s history event

NILES — The 22nd annual Trumbull County Women’s History Celebration will be at 5:30 p.m. March 6 at Ciminero’s Banquet Center, 123 Main St. A re-enactor from the Cleveland Women in History troupe will present the life of Hedda Hopper, the “B” movie actress of the 1920s and 1930s who became a nationally known newspaper gossip columnist. Tickets for the dinner and program are $20 each and can be obtained by calling E. Carol Maxwell, (330) 393-5870, or mailing a check to Box 208, Warren, 44482. The deadline is Friday.

Children’s History Club

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Historical Center will have its Children’s History Club from noon to 3 p.m. March 8, 151 W. Wood St. The program is called “The 1940’s.” Discover the world of Rosie the Riveter, ration books, World War II, Dr. Spock and the arrival of the baby boomers. History Club is for young historians ages 8-12. A snack is provided. Advance registration is required by calling (330) 743-5934. The cost of the program is $10 for Ohio Historical Society members and $12 for nonmembers.

Diocese cemeteries

All artificial flowers and decorations must be removed from graves before March 1 from the Diocese of Youngstown Cemeteries including Calvary and Resurrection in Youngstown, All Soul’s in Cortland and Calvary Cemetery in Massillon.

Program canceled

LEETONIA — The WellnessOne program to discuss local health concerns set for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Leetonia American Post 131’s banquet room has been canceled. No reason was given for the cancellation. Gary E. Phillips, the village administrator, issued a release saying a session has been scheduled for 6 p.m. March 27 at the Legion post.

Fishing season to open

YOUNGSTOWN — Fishing season on lakes Glacier and Newport and the shorelines of Yellow Creek in Yellow Creek Park opens March 1. Private boats may be used on lakes Glacier and Newport between 6:30 a.m. and dark. Shoreline fishing is permitted from 5 a.m. to dark.
