YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. recently raised nearly $1,100 to benefit care given to young patients at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. During January, the participating churches of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, New Bethel Baptist Church and Price Memorial AME Zion held a designated offering to support the research and charitable works of the hospital. Nationwide, the international fraternity is committed to raising more than $500,000 over the next five years. St. Jude has been treating children battling sickle cell, cancers and other catastrophic diseases since its founding in 1962. St. Jude’s is the first institution established for the sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly cancer.

Shadow Days for kids
HUBBARD — St. Patrick School, 38 E. Water Ave., is now scheduling Shadow Days for interested children and families. A Shadow Day allows children an opportunity to become acquainted with the routine of a normal day at St. Patrick School in his or her respective grade. Children who will be entering kindergarten in 2008-09 are also invited to attend. To schedule a visit, call (330) 534-2509. Pupils in grades one to eight may spend a full day, and kindergarten has the option of spending a full or half-day. St. Patrick School kindergarten program is a full-day program. School hours are 8:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
High school information
CANFIELD — Canfield High School’s “8th Grade Information and Orientation Session” is set for 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school auditorium. There will be tours, demonstrations, registration information, assistance with course selection and more.
GED testing offered
YOUNGSTOWN — Choffin Career Technical Center is offering official GED testing through the Youngstown Adult Basic and Literacy Education Program. All testing will be done at St. John Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., and all participants must preregister by calling (330) 744-8715. They must also bring a valid state ID. Morning test dates are March 3, 4, 17 and 18 and April 7, 8, 21 and 22. Afternoon dates are March 3 and 4 and April 7 and 8.
Enrollment applications
for community school
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Community School, 50 Essex St., will be taking applications for enrollment for the 2008-09 school year from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday. All applicants are subject to a lottery for each grade level, and children applying for kindergarten must be 5 years old by Sept. 30. Registration will be scheduled after parents receive notices of acceptance.
Ursuline entrance exam
YOUNGSTOWN — Ursuline High School will administer its placement test for all incoming freshmen from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 8 in the high school cafeteria, 750 Wick Ave. There is no charge for the test. Students should bring two No. 2 pencils and a calculator. To register, parents must call the main office at (330) 744-4563 to reserve a spot for their child. Placement in honors courses and the awarding of certain academic scholarships are based on successful completion of the entrance exam.
Discover Day at Malone
CANTON — The Malone College Office of Admissions will hold a Discover Day for high school juniors and seniors March 17. There will be an admissions presentation, campus tour and lunch with a professor from the prospective student’s chosen major. Students may also schedule an individual appointment between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. that day.
