‘NUMB3RS’ math program will help students involved in project at Choffin

Students at Choffin Career and Technical Center will use the program.

YOUNGSTOWN — A high school math education program based on the popular television dramatic series “NUMB3RS” will be used to reduce the need for mathematics remediation rates of Youngstown city school students.

The Office of Associate Degree and Tech Prep at Youngstown State University was awarded a grant of $18,100 from the State College Tech Prep’s Urban Network for the project.

The students targeted in the project are enrolled in College Tech Prep programs at Choffin Career and Technical Center entering post-secondary education. The project is called the Math Advancement Program and is scheduled to run through June 2008 in collaboration with the YSU Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

MAP will involve teaching a pilot group of Choffin seniors the YSU Math 1501 (Elementary Algebraic Models) course, the mathematics course that is just below the college–level mathematics course.

In addition to using the same syllabus and text for Math 1501, students will also participate in the Texas Instruments/National Council of Teachers of Mathematics educational outreach program called, “We All Use Math Everyday.”

“We All Use Math Everyday” is based on the hit CBS–TV series “NUMB3RS.”

The program includes Texas Instrument and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics–developed education activities for teachers and students based on the “NUMB3RS” TV show. The activities are focused on the mathematics presented in each episode, which are based on real FBI cases.

Mathematics consultants work with the shows throughout production to ensure that the mathematics used to help analyze and solve crimes is real and accurate as depicted by the FBI agents.
