She gets hang of storing jewelry

Dear Heloise: I have a lot of costume jewelry, and jewelry making is also a hobby. I had so many necklaces and earrings that I hung them on the wall behind the bathroom door using nails. I hung more and more stuff, and it began to look messy and disorganized.

So, at the home-improvement store, I bought several coat-hook assemblies. Each was a piece of painted wood with three, four or five hooks on them. My husband helped me hang them up. Now my jewelry looks great, and there is even room for more! K.M., New Braunfels, Texas

Behind any door is a good place to hang items like hats, purses and scarves. Use that space — don’t waste it! Heloise

Dear Readers: Here is a jewelry travel hint. Use the small, clear, stackable bead organizers (also sold to keep fishing lures in) for jewelry when traveling. You can store items individually or coupled together, and you easily can see what you’re looking for. Heloise

Dear Heloise: Instead of using paper towels to clean windows, for polishing, etc., I use clean cloth diapers. Their uses are unlimited. The square size are less expensive, at about $10 a dozen. They wash great and withstand heavy bleaching if necessary. It also helps our landfills. Donna Gallant, via e-mail

Doing laundry can be a drag, but not if you have my Handy Stain Guide for Clothing — dealing with laundry stains will be a little easier. The pamphlet tells you how to remove stains, from adhesive tape to wine. It’s perfect for a college-bound student or a child moving out on his or her own. Also included are Heloise home-style stain hints and the Last-Ditch Stain Remover. To receive a copy of this great eight-page pamphlet, please send $4 and a long, self-addressed, stamped (58 cents) envelope to: Heloise/Clothing, P.O. Box 795001, San Antonio, TX 78279-5001. Don’t automatically assume that you can wash a throw rug in the washer. Please check the care label first. Be sure to vacuum or shake it outside before washing, and it’s usually better to line-dry or air-dry the rug, because many of them have a rubber backing and the dryer can cause it to deteriorate. Dear Heloise: We were assembling a desk recently that had a multitude of small parts. To keep the parts from being misplaced, I put them in an empty, clean egg carton. You can separate by type or size. Casandra Ridge, via fax.

Dear Heloise: Still need to finish that painting job tomorrow? Put the brush, roller, etc., into a plastic grocery bag and close up the end. Can’t get to it until next week? (You should double-bag this or put in a sealable plastic bag. Heloise) Put the whole bag in the freezer. Only takes a few minutes to thaw, and you are ready to go! Barbara Henckel, via e-mail
