Pittsburgh schools have 12,000 pounds of recalled beef
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh school district is sitting on 12,000 pounds of beef that has been recalled.
Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman Ebony Pugh says some of the beef from a Southern California slaughterhouse had already been eaten by students. But there have been no reports of illnesses.
Pugh says the beef is being kept at a warehouse until notification from federal officials.
Pugh says two vendors notified the school district Feb. 1 of possible problems with the beef.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. in Chino, Calif., on Sunday. That came after allegations of animal abuse.
