WARREN — St. Joseph Pain Management is sponsoring a Chronic Pain seminar from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 11 at St. Demetrios Banquet and Community Center, 3223 Atlantic St. N.E. Pain management specialists Drs. Tracy L. Neuendorf and Victor A Georgescu will talk about “Alternative Treatments for the Patient in Pain” “Back Pain 101,” respectively. College, hospital
collaborate on program

ALLIANCE — Alliance Community Hospital and Mount Union College are sharing in an educational/community service collaboration between the hospital’s Community Care Center and the college’s English department students.

Called the “Life Stories” project, coordinated by Alliance Community Hospital Volunteer Services Coordinator, Marcia Todd, and Mount Union Assistant English Professor Nancy Pine, it involves 18 first-year writing students interviewing residents of the Community Care Center and writing biographies about those residents. After being paired up with a resident, the students will, over the next six weeks, independently visit residents and interview them for “life story” research papers.

Beatitude House grant

WARREN — The Cafaro Family Foundation has donated $5,000 to Beatitude House’s Warren facility. Homeless women and their children are able to live in this facility for up to two years, during which time they attend a full-time education program. The women meet with an on-site counselor and case-manager weekly, and open a savings account upon entering the program into which 5 percent of their monthly income is deposited.

This facility will undergo a planned expansion this summer, creating an additional 6 homes for homeless families. A total of $1 million has been raised, with just over $400,000 necessary to complete construction.

Beatitude House, sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters, opened their doors in 1991 to 4 families. Today nearly 2,000 women and children have been served. At any given time, Beatitude House has 100 women and children in residence.

Radiothon raises record

AKRON — The ninth annual “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” Radiothon with 98.1 WKDD raised a record $1,000,726 for Akron Children’s Hospital, making it the only children’s hospital in Ohio to raise over $1 million during a Radiothon.  

During the 43-hour live broadcast from Children’s Hospital’s Atrium Feb. 8-10, dozens of patients and families shared their personal stories with WKDD personalities, Matt Patrick and Angela, prompting thousands of listeners to call in with generous pledges. The Akron Children’s Hospital’s 2007 Radiothon that raised $858,376. Since it began, the “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” Radiothon with 98.1 WKDD has raised over $5.2 million.

All funds raised during Radiothon are used in the areas of greatest need at the Hospital, including purchasing “kid-sized” equipment, funding research and providing patient care and community outreach programs.

Red Cross training

YOUNGSTOWN — The American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter is offering lifeguard and water safety instructor training at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. The water safety instructor course is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sundays beginning March 30 and ending April 19. The cost is $165. The lifeguard training is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p .m. on two weekends, Feb. 24 and 24 and March 1 and 2. The cost is $165. Participants in both courses must be strong swimmers. Diet/lifestyle program

VILLA MARIA, PA. —Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will present the program, “Aging Gracefully — The Diet/Lifestyle Connection,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 5. Janee Kuta-Iliano, a preventative health educator, will lead the discussion of whole foods and proper supplementation.

Kuta-Iliano is certified as a raw food chef and instructor and will demonstrate how to prepare delicious raw and living foods, while educating her audience as to the therapeutic benefits of the foods prepared. Samples of food will be provided. The cost is $ 15 per person. Bring a friend and pay only $12 each. Registration is required by Feb. 27. Program on personality

VILLA MARIA, Pa. — Introduc-tion to the Enneagram will be offered from 6:30 p.m. Friday to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center.

The Enneagram is a personality theory combining the insights of modern psychology with proven wisdom of ancient philosophies. In this theory, there are nine personality types.

Sister Cheryl Rose will lead the program. She holds a master’s degree in religious studies from John Carroll University, Cleveland. She is involved in full-time ministry offering retreats, programs, Enneagram workshops and spiritual direction for adults and young adults.
