Fitch wins wrestling sectional crown


Four Falcons won championships.

AUSTINTOWN — Four wrestlers won championships and three finished as runners-up as the Fitch High wrestling team scored 226 points to win the Division I sectional title Saturday.

Tony Jameson, 145 pounds, got off to a good start in his effort to capture a fourth state championship, as he won by technical fall 19-3 over Canfield’s Aron Brenner.

Louis Greco (152) of the Falcons pinned Dan Jacobs of Stow in 3 minutes, 22 seconds. Josh Pankewicz (160) won a 7-2 decision over Alex Korecky of Solon and Chris Miller (215) pinned Kris Maruna of Stow in 3:58.

Shawn Ague (103) of the Falcons lost to Justin Toth of Painesville Riverside 8-2 in a title match. Jake Peterson (140) was beaten by Jake Thompson of Stow 2-1, and teammate D.J. Moss (285) was shut out 2-0 by Zach Slocum of Riverside.

Ricky Zupko of Boardman decisioned Rob Reed of Canfield, 8-4 for the 103 championship and Mike Menchi of Twinsburg beat Brad Benedict of Canfield, 3-0 at 135.

The top four in each weight class advanced to the Division I district tournament at Massillon Perry Friday and Saturday.

Division III

ROOTSTOWN — Girard qualified eight wrestlers for the district tournament at Maple Heights.

Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy won the team title with 218 points. Girard was third with 163.5, Jackson-Milton was fourth with 132, South Range was fifth with 108.5, Brookfield was seventh with 87, Warren JFK was 10th with 74 and Ursuline was 12th with 52.

Nico Francis of the Indians won a major decision over Matt Hickin of CVCA 15-7 for the 135-pound title. Jake Curto (145) of Girard lost to Lou Leiby of Woodridge 8-7 in the 145 title match while the Indians’ Gary Bass was beaten by Andy Jenkins of Woodridge 18-3 at 171.

Jackson-Milton’s Santino Pizzulo decisioned Joe Bailos of Mogadore 13-5 for the 112 crown. The Bluejays’ Dan Clawson decisioned Michael-Paul Jenkins of Ursuline 4-2 for the 285 title.

Tyler Thompson of Brookfield decisioned Vinny Pizzuto of Jackson-Milton in the 103 championship match while the Bluejays’ Matt Mascioli lost to Shelton Morris of CVCA in the 125 title match.

Lambert McElrath of Woodridge won by a technical fall, 26-11, over Brennan Witmer of South Range at 140.

John Drummond of Warren JFK decisioned Phil Everett of Mogadore 7-5 for the 215 title.
