Canfield swimmers set 6 school records


Garrett Trebilcock made it to state in four events in
district swimming.

CLEVELAND — Canfield High set six school records Friday and Saturday at the boys Division district swimming and diving meet at Cleveland State University’s Robert F. Busby Natatorium.

Canfield finished fourth in the team standings with 230 points. Boardman (95) was seventh and Mooney (15) placed 29th. University School won the team title with 286.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state meet Friday and Saturday at Canton’s Branin Natatorium.

The Cardinals’ Eric Davis, Gavin Trebilcock, Ryan King and James Hunter took first place in the 200 freestyle relay in a school record time of 1 minute, 26.72 seconds. Davis, Jordan Graham, Garrett Trebilcock and Hunter also won the 400 free relay in a school record 3:10.60.

Garrett Trebilcock qualified for state in four events. He was second in the 200 individual medley in a school record 1:54.15 and he was a member of the 200 medley relay, which also included King, Gavin Trebilcock and Hunter that finished first a set a school record (1:36.15).

Davis was third in the 100 butterfly in a school record 51.50 and Hunter was fifth in the 100 freestyle in a school record 47.26.

Canfield’s Elizabeth Wilkens finished seventh in 1-meter diving to qualify for the state meet.

Mike Barringer of Boardman took second place in the 100 breaststroke in (59.73). Conner O’Halloran of the Spartans was third in the 100 free (47.13).

O’Halloran, Jared Ebie, Tommy Slagle and Barringer were seventh in the 200 free relay (1:28.36).

Tom Boniface of Mooney finished sixth in the 100 backstroke (54.20).

In girls Div. I, Solon won the team championship with 248 points. Boardman was ninth with 83 and Canfield was 17th with 47. The top five individuals-relays in each event advanced to state.

The Spartans’ Kayla Aldan, Megan Palmer, Kamiren Veisz and Ashley Aldan placed ninth in the 200 free relay in a school record 1:42.02 and could be an alternate for state.

Palmer, a junior for the Spartans, set a school record (5:24.81) in the 500 free as she placed eighth and could be alternate to state.

Gates Mills Hawken won the girls Div. II crown with 456 points. Lakeview placed 15th with 45, McDonald was 17th with 37, Poland was 21st with 23 and Mooney was 28th with 9. The top three individuals-relays in each event advanced to state.

Katie Joseph of McDonald took first place in the 100 free in a school record 52.23.

Emilee Gysgem of Lakeview finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.39).
