YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning Valley Rose Society has announced that Jason Lawton will be the speaker at its first meeting of 2008. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Davis Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens, Mill Creek MetroParks. The public is welcome, and a nominal fee will be charged for nonmembers of the society.

The organization is headed by the following newly-elected officers: Joan Sewickley, president; Lawton, first vice president; Len Antal, second vice president; Norma Brown, recording secretary; Peg Raupach, corresponding secretary; and Judy Arlo, treasurer.

St. David’s Day event set by Welsh association

NILES — Niles Gymanfa Ganu Association will hold an annual St. David’s Day banquet Feb. 24 at the McKinley Memorial Auditorium, 40 Main St.

A 2:30 p.m. social featuring punch, Welsh cakes and bara brith will be followed by dinner at 3. Entertainment will be provided by Welsh baritone Trevor Williams and Geraint Wilkes.

Tickets are $14 for the Swiss steak dinner, $16 for chicken Francais dinners, $17 for lamb shank dinners and $8 for childen’s dinners of chicken tenders.

Civic league plans Black History program

WARREN — Warren Civic League has planned a Black History program that will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at Third Christian Church, 241 First St. S.W.

The theme for the free public event is “Remembering African American Heroes.” Participating will be Kwama Williams and the Community Rites of Passage from Akron, Symphony of Youngstown and Black Mystery Readers. Showcased will be African drumming, dancing, storytelling and singing.

Edna Douglas is chairman for the event, and committee members are Flora Bonner, Ruth Geenlee, Evella Richardson and Dal Swanson.

Location changed for Rotary raffle

AUSTINTOWN — Due to remodeling work being done at the Maronite Center, the Rotary Club of Austintown has moved the location for its annual reverse raffle on March 1 to Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center on South Avenue in Boardman.

The event will begin with appetizers at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 followed by the reverse raffle, a Chinese auction and dancing. For details or tickets, contact Lisa Oles at (330) 799-3005.

Dinner to benefit mother and daughter

LEAVITTSBURG — A spaghetti dinner will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. March 1 at the cafeteria of Labrae High School, 101 N. Leavitt Road, as a benefit for cancer patient Mary Jo Vucco-Booze and her special-needs daughter, Lindsay.

Tickets for the benefit are $7 for adults, $5 for students and free for those 3 and under. Tickets will be available at the door or can be purchased in advance at Lisa’s Little Angels Day Care, 6403 Kale Adam Road Leavittsburg, or by calling (330) 898-6681. The event will include a Chinese auction and a 50-50 raffle.
