Youngstown woman jailed on charge of robbery at grocery store

YOUNGSTOWN — A Kenmore Avenue woman was in the Mahoning County Jail on Thursday, accused of fighting with an employee at a Gypsy Lane supermarket.

Sonya L. Shannon, 28, faces a robbery charge. An employee at Sparkle Market in the Union Square Plaza on Gypsy told police Shannon picked up a pie, 12-pack of beer and two boxed rice meals and left the store without paying.

When the employee stopped her in the parking lot, Shannon told him that she had the money to pay and accompanied him back into the store, the employee told police.

But when they got to the register, Shannon “flipped out,” the store worker said, refused to pay, struck him in the face and tried to flee.

The employee told police that he restrained Shannon but released her when another man inside the store said he was a detective and told him to let her go.

Police arrested Shannon at Guadalupe and Tod avenues on the city’s North Side, and the manager identified her.
