Trumbull sweep nets 7 deadbeat parents

WARREN — A sweep designed to pick up deadbeat moms and dads who owe child support netted seven delinquent parents.

Thomas Mahoney, director of Trumbull County Job and Family Services, said there are about 60 outstanding warrants, including 10 for women, who are in arrears on their child support payments.

The warrants were issued by Trumbull County Family Court, Mahoney said.

Sheriff Thomas Altiere said he had eight deputies assigned to “Valentine Sweep,” which began the effort Thursday morning and continued to execute the warrants until dark.

Mahoney said the county had an amnesty program where those who owed child support could arrange a payment plan without charges being filed against them.

Those being sought Thursday did not take advantage of the amnesty program, he added.

“These guys run all the time. They’re constantly moving,” Mahoney said, noting they are difficult to find.

The county previously had annual sweeps for deadbeats, but there hasn’t been one for five years. “We kind of resurrected it,” Mahoney added.
