Court ruling takes power from Mahoning voters

EDITOR:

Did the Ohio Supreme Court really take a Mahoning County citizen off the ballot for Mahoning County sheriff? Since when do they decide who the people want to win in an election? What’s next? Are the courts going to decide who becomes the next president of the United States?

Every year I feel that my decision as a voter is less meaningful. Randall Wellington is a man who felt that he was going to be defeated by a newcomer, David Aey. Instead of running a campaign and using campaign funds to defeat his opponent, he tried to remove his opponent from the ballot. The Ohio Supreme Court then went ahead and gave him the power he needed to win the election. This is a slap in the face to every Mahoning County voter.

I believe this is only the beginning of the dirtiest politics we will ever see in Mahoning County. To run for president of the United States all you need is to be 35 years of age and a natural born United States citizen. Then why in Mahoning County is the Supreme Court deciding that a citizen of the community who has 13 years’ experience as a sheriff’s deputy and a U.S. marshal with supervisor experience not be allowed to run for sheriff?

This is an outrage to the Mahoning County voters. What would our forefathers say? Our country was founded on the belief that “we the people” have rights. These rights our clearly being taken away from us.

We’re finally seeing why ‘made in America’ matters

EDITOR:

Back in the ’70s when I was still young and working I was shopping for Christmas presents. I was at the Strouss department store in the Austintown Plaza. I was looking for a pair of men’s leather gloves and I asked the young clerk if she had any leather gloves that were made in this country. We both started looking through all the leather gloves and were coming up empty. All the gloves they had were made in another country. She finally turned to me and asked “Why does that matter”?

After over 30 years of remembering that question and seeing where this country is today, can anyone say “Why does that matter”? How many of you know that even our bandages are made in China?

People in this country need to ask themselves why this has happened. We are all responsible for our shortsightedness in demanding more, more, more. More money, more leisure time, more “things”, etc. No wonder jobs are becoming scarce here. We’ve priced ourselves out of business. We’ve been acting like it doesn’t matter.

Vote for your best choice

EDITOR:

What is wrong with the American people? Why do they need to have someone endorsed by a person, persons, or organization to tell them how to vote? It is their responsibility to find out about each candidate and then decide for themselves who they believe is the best qualified to run this country.

It makes no difference if they are male or female, black or white, their church affiliation, how much money they have or who has endorsed them. They should not be a follower, but vote for whom they think and hope will run our country in the best possible way.
