Because of icy roads, Waste Management trash collection service was canceled in midday Wednesday for residential customers in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Portage counties. Collection could be delayed by one to two days for some residential customers in these counties the rest of this week. All Waste Management customers, however, should still put out their waste for pickup on their normal scheduled service day, company spokesmen stressed. Unregistered offender
gets 5 years in prison

LISBON — A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for being a sexually oriented offender who failed to register his residence with authorities. A jury returned the verdict Tuesday in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court. The same jury found Vernon E. Ballard, 33, of West Main Street, New Waterford, innocent of a charge of gross sexual imposition. Ballard was accused of having a girl, then age 7, who was living in a nearby apartment, touch him May 18, 2007.

Clean Energy Network

CHAMPION — The first 2008 Clean Energy Network will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the technology building of the Trumbull campus of Kent State University. The group is dedicated to increasing awareness in sustainable, green, renewable energy technology. The main speakers will be Dan and David Quinlan of Energy Detectives in Salem. Topics will include how energy audits save money, what behavior changes yield the greatest savings and what home improvements result in the most savings.

Eatery helping teen

BOARDMAN — A local restaurant will help a Salem youth today for Valentine’s Day. Donations to help remodel a bathroom for Andrew Shasteen, 15, of Salem. The Chuck E. Cheese on U.S. Route 224 will donate some proceeds to help the fund from 3 to 9 p.m. today. Customers must mention Andrew’s fund, and the shop will donate 15 percent of those sales to the fund. Andrew has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. He needs a larger bathroom. Donations can also be made at any Huntington Bank. Funds should be earmarked for Andrew’s Bathroom Fund.

Wilder celebration

COLUMBIANA — Children in grades three through six are invited to the Columbiana Public Library from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 26 to celebrate the books and birthday of author Laura Ingalls Wilder. LISBON — The Columbiana County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is seeking readers during MRDD awareness month in March. Big rigs jackknifed

LIBERTY — Several vehicles ended up in the ditch when two tractor-trailers jackknifed on icy Interstate 80 at state Route 11 at midnight Tuesday. There were no major injuries reported in the incident, which the Ohio State Highway Patrol said closed the highway until about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Outage in Warren

WARREN — About 300 customers in downtown Warren lost power Wednesday afternoon when a 50-year-old Youngstown man lost control of his vehicle while driving fast on Niles Road Southeast and sheared off a utility pole, bringing down a bank of transformers. The crash occurred about 3:50 p.m., city police said. The driver, Maurice G. Daniels, spun and came to rest on railroad tracks near Diane Sauer Chevrolet after hitting the pole. He was charged with reckless operation, driving under suspension, not wearing a seat belt and possession of marijuana and may face other charges, police said. Ohio Edison said power was restored to all but a couple of customers by 6:15 p.m. Daniels was taken to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries. There were no other passengers in his vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved.
