Officials OK land purchase for plant

Construction is set to take 12 to 18 months

HILLSVILLE, Pa. — Mahoning Township supervisors agreed to buy seven acres on U.S. Route 224 on the Mahoning River for construction of a sewer plant.

They agreed at their Tuesday meeting to pay owner Paul Siegel $10,000 per acre or $70,000, the price the land was recently appraised at by a Beaver Falls agency.

Supervisor Gary Pezzuolo said plans for the sewage plant are expected to be completed at the end of the month. They then go to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for review before plant construction is put out for bid.

The bid is expected to be awarded in May with construction anticipated to begin in June. Construction is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

The planned Edinburg-Hillsville sanitary sewer line is proposed to serve 591 homes as well as the Centaur racetrack being planned for the north part of the township. Funding is still being arranged for the project.

Also Tuesday, supervisors said they will meet with Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials to discuss the detour route once the U.S. Route 224 bridge is closed for replacement.
