YOUNGSTOWN — A burning candle knocked over by a 6-year-old girl started a bedroom fire at 170 W. Chalmers Ave., the girl’s mother told firefighters. Flames were showing on the second floor when crews arrived around 10:15 p.m. Monday. No injuries were reported. Damage was set at $7,000.

MVSD gets $1.8M loan

MINERAL RIDGE — The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District has received a $1.8 million low-interest loan from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Pollution Control Loan Fund. The MVSD will use the money to clean out three lagoons which are used as part of the drinking water treatment process that have filled in with lime sludge. The district will save $315,600 in interest fees over the 20-year loan, according to the Ohio EPA. The district treats water from Meander Reservoir and sells it to Youngstown, Niles and McDonald for resale to their customers.

Fire department secretary

NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township trustees hired Kristin Yokum as the new secretary for the township fire department. Yokum, a township resident, is to be paid $8.50 an hour working a maximum of 20 hours a week, with no benefits. She is also a firefighter and paramedic. The trustees recently created the new secretarial position because of the increased workload at the fire department. Also at their recent meeting, the trustees agreed to sell two of the township’s older firetrucks to Unity Township for a $20,000. The price includes the two trucks and equipment on them.
