Petitions aim to stop Wal-Mart in Canfield Township

CANFIELD — A township resident has created a petition that he hopes residents will sign to show their dislike for a proposed Super Wal-Mart in the township.

Dan Bienko, an architect who lives in the township, gave township trustees a stack of petitions at the trustees’ regular meeting Monday night. He asked trustees to have the petitions available for signing at the township hall.

Bienko said he hopes Canfield township and city residents will sign the petititions, and take some to get filled out themselves.

Bienko said he believes the petitions will be of value the next time Wal-Mart tries to propose rezoning of land on the northeast corner of Raccoon Road and Boardman-Canfield Road for use as a 187,000-square-foot Wal-Mart Super Center.

Wal-Mart proposed the zoning change to the Mahoning County Planning Commission but later withdrew the request.
