Firefighters battle
2 blazes in bitter cold
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Fire Department fought two fires in bitter cold on Sunday.
Some 18 members of a family got safely out of their home on Hazeltine Avenue about 4:30 p.m.
Battalion Chief Robert Hian said that the family had escaped to a neighbor’s house. No one was injured.
The fire broke out when a blanket in a third-floor bedroom apparently ignited after touching a space heater, and the fire spread to a mattress. The Mahoning Chapter Red Cross Disaster Action Team helped the family.
The house sustained about $5,000 in damage, mostly to the third floor.
The fire department also responded to an arson fire at 33 E. Boston Ave., about 12:45 p.m.
The fire had been deliberately set inside and on the front porch, firefighters said.
