Scullion sisters step up as Salem blasts Aurora

AUSTINTOWN — The Salem High girls basketball team cruised in its Division II sectional opener, taking a 20-3 lead en route to a 54-25 win over Aurora on Saturday at Fitch High.
Katie Scullion scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Quakers (16-4). Amy Scullion added 14 points and she had four steals.
Brittany Ritchie finished with 10 points. Jessica Blackley led Aurora with 13 points and she had nine rebounds.
Southeast 72, Lakeview 41
AUSTINTOWN — The unbeaten Pirates (21-0) put the game out of reach 37-16 by intermission in the Div. II contest. Mya Levels led the balanced scoring attack with 24 points. Erikka Coontz chipped in with 18 and Lindsay Speidel had 16.
Joanna Novotny paced the Bulldogs (7-14) with 13 points. MacKenzie Palente finished with 11.
Streetsboro 36, Niles 33
AUSTINTOWN — Streetsboro’s defense held Niles (6-15) to six points in the first quarter and four in the second to take a 16-10 halftime lead and the Red Dragons weren’t able to catch up in another Div. II sectional game.
Nina Gabrelcik scored a game-high 22 points for the Red Dragons. Amanda Binion chipped in with five.
Division I
Howland 59, Nordonia 38
SOLON — Senior Alexa Williams, a Lehigh recruit, scored 15 points with team-highs in rebounds (13), assists (five) and steals (three) to lead third-seeded Howland in the first round of the Division I tournament at Solon High.
Kelly Barzak added 18 points for the Tigers (18-3), who play Maple Heights at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Brittany Kilgore scored 11 points for Nordonia (11-10), which fell behind 28-15 at halftime.
Warren Harding 72,
Garfield Heights 39
SOLON — Kamela Bender scored 23 points and made six steals and three assists for Harding in a first-round tournament game.
Jasmine Kirkland scored 10 points for the Raiders (15-6). Jahmarra Warfield had nine. Kourtney Williams pulled down seven rebounds while Aundrea Baldrige had six.
Harding advances to play Brecksville on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Solon High.
Division IV
Leetonia 44, Jackson-Milton 27
HUBBARD — The Bears’ defense held the Bluejays to two points in the first quarter, seven in the second and five in the third in building a commanding 35-14 lead.
Lynsie Davis scored 19 points and Deidra Currie 10 to pace Leetonia (16-5). Alyssa Chine led the Bluejays (3-18) with 12 points.
Monday, Mathews goes against Western Reserve at 6 p.m. and Lowellville takes on Youngstown Christian at 7:45 p.m.
Lordstown 56, Southington 47
HUBBARD — The Red Devils (13-8) built a 38-31 lead by the end of the third quarter. Brianna Blodgett and Lindsay Harrison sparked Lordstown with 28 and 16 points respectively.
Kaylin Barco led the Wildcats (7-14) with 10 points.
Regular season
CANFIELD — The Canfield High girls basketball team clinched a tie for first place in the Metro Athletic Conference as it posted a 80-42 victory over Poland Saturday in the Cardinals’ gymnasium.
The Cardinals (17-2, 12-1), who can win the league outright with another victory, surged to a 31-9 lead in the first quarter and were cruising 52-19 at intermission.
Bryanne Halfhill went on a 31-point scoring spree to trigger the offense. Kate Popovec added 15 and Jillian Halfhill finished with 14. Michelle Benson led the Bulldogs (4-16, 4-10) with 14 points.
