Boardman breaks 3 records
The Spartans finished fourth at Saturday’s sectional swim meet.
AKRON — Boardman’s Ashley Aldan shattered a 21-year-old school record in the 100-yard freestyle and helped the Spartans break another mark in the 400 free relay en route to a fourth place finish at Saturday’s Division I girls sectional swim meet at the University of Akron.
“We had the meet of our lives over here,” Spartans coach Terry O’Halloran said. “The girls swam unbelievably well.”
Aldan, who placed second in the 100 free, had a time of 53.80, breaking Jackie Bak’s old mark of 55.15. Kent Roosevelt’s Taylor Wise was first (53.62).
Bak lost another mark Saturday when Megan Palmer won the 500 free with a time of 5:26.70. The previous mark, set in 1988, was 5:27.90.
Aldan, and her sister Kayla, joined Katie Henson and Palmer in winning the 400 free relay (3:44.66), breaking the old school mark of 3:49.62 set earlier this year.
Canfield placed fourth in that event and third in the 200 medley relay.
The top three individuals and top two relays in each event earn automatic berths in next weekend’s district meet at Cleveland State University. Several swimmers will also earn at-large district based on statewide times.
Aldan won the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.93 — almost three seconds better than Henson (1:01.34), who placed second.
Palmer placed second in the 200 free. Boardman placed fourth in the 200 free relay.
Canfield’s Emily King won the 50 free and was fifth in the 100 backstroke to lead the Cardinals to fifth in the team standings.
“We’re looking forward to districts next week,” said O’Halloran. “Hopefully we can better those times. I think we’ve got a reasonable shot of getting some girls into state competition.”
Division II
Mooney senior Morgan McCarty placed second in the 100 back with a time of 1:11.10 in Division II competition earlier Saturday.
Columbiana junior Stephanie Case placed third in the 100 butterfly (1:03.58) and fourth in the 50 free (26.28).
