Dog up for adoption
YOUNGSTOWN — The black male Labrador abandoned by his owner after the dog and a miniature horse got loose on the South Side last week is up for adoption and can be seen from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Angels for Animals, state Route 165, Canfield.
The 4-year-old dog, first called Lucky, has been renamed Nelson, after his rescuer, Dave Nelson, a deputy dog warden. Diane Less of Angels for Animals said anyone interested in Nelson who can’t see the animal in person at the shelter can call her at (330) 502-5352.
She said Nelson was neutered Friday, and heartworm was detected for which he must be treated.
Recorder issues warning
WARREN — Trumbull County Recorder Diana Marchese is warning the public of a company offering to provide a certified copy of their deed for $59 when her office charges $5.
Marchese said Friday that National Deed Service Inc. of Northbrook, Ill., is sending letters to property owners offering to provide the service.
The recorder explained that two residents were in the recorder’s office this week to get copies of their deed after receiving National Deed letters that also ask for a credit card number.
The letter does have a disclaimer that says many government records are available free or at a nominal cost.
A recording at the company phone says that National Deed is a private company that’s not affiliated with any government agencies. It says the company gets the names of potential customers from real estate mailing lists.
Police recruitment
YOUNGSTOWN — A booth will be set up to do minority recruiting for the Youngstown Police Department from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Four Seasons Flea Market on McCartney Road. Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin Casey of the planning and training division said YPD doesn’t attract enough minorities — black, Hispanic, Asian and Middle Eastern — and she’d like to see that change.
The YPD roster shows 141 white men, 23 black men, six white women, five black women, seven Hispanic men and three Hispanic women. The civil service test for applicants is expected to be given in April.
Sheriff’s race heats up
WARREN — Trumbull County sheriff’s candidate Joseph Consiglio jokingly says he might sell Sheriff Thomas Altiere a Web site on the Internet for his campaign. Consiglio said today that his campaign bought all the Web sites that Altiere might use for his campaign such as “Tom Altiere for Sheriff.” Consiglio said the domain names were bought Aug. 27.
Altiere is now saying Consiglio is playing dirty politics. Consiglio said that the strategy of blocking a candidate’s name from being used on a Web site has been used in other political campaigns and that Altiere should have planned ahead rather than reacting three weeks before the March primary. Both men are Democrats.
