Eagles soar to defeat L. East
Warren Harding clinch a share of the Steel Valley Conference title.
YOUNGSTOWN — David Colbert scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Friday to help the Youngstown Christian High boys basketball team hold off Lutheran East to hand the Falcons their first East Suburban League loss, 73-70.
John Pecchia added 18 points while Anthony LaGamba had eight assists and six steals for the Eagles (12-6, 6-2).
The Eagles outscored Lutheran East 29-23 in the third quarter to take a three-point lead heading into the fourth. Olonzo Johnson scored 12 of his 15 points in the third quarter.
William Felder had 30 points and Bradley Stevenson added 27 to lead Lutheran East (12-6, 7-1), which turned the ball over in the closing seconds before it could get off a game-tying 3-point attempt.
Warren Harding 79, Ursuline 49
WARREN — Sheldon Brogdon scored 15 points as the Raiders (16-1, 4-0 Steel Valley Conference) clinched a share of the league crown.
Damian Eargle scored 12 points and made 10 rebounds while Chris Henderson also chipped in with 12 points.
For the Irish (9-9, 1-3), Dominique Cole scored 27 points and Nick McCartney had 12.
Warren JFK 61, East 55
WARREN — Ryan McCollum scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Eagles (8-10, 2-2 SVC).
Brian Guarnieri scored 15 points while Nick Brown had 13 and eight rebounds. Free throws by Boo Timko and Guarnieri in the final minute sealed the victory.
For the Panthers (9-9, 2-2), Kenny Carter scored 23 points while Jamayle Roland had 16.
Campbell 85, Struthers 59
STRUTHERS — The Red Devils (13-6, 8-5 Metro Athletic Conference) rushed out to a 20-5 lead in the first quarter and they were in command 44-18 at intermission .
Nate Hodge and Jerah’me Williams triggered Campbell’s balanced scoring attack with 15 points apiece. Antwan Dawson added 14 points and Lester Hughes 13.
Jordan Morrell led the Wildcats (6-13, 2-11) with 26 points. Keith Karas chipped in with 13.
Salem 67, East Liverpool 62
SALEM — Austen Hutton scored 20 points, making 11 of 12 from the free throw line, to lead Salem, which outscored visiting East Liverpool 23-12 in the fourth quarter to rally for a MAC win.
Jordan Strabala added 15 points and Zack O’Brien had 10 for the Quakers (10-9, 5-8 MAC).
Sam Kinsey scored 17 points to lead three players in double figures for the Potters (4-15, 1-12).
Niles 41, Howland 39
NILES — The Tigers (12-7, 7-6 MAC) held a 32-30 lead heading into the final eight minutes, but the Red Dragons (7-12, 4-9) rallied 11-7 for the victory.
Ryan Frantz scored 14 points and Dan Rosenberger finished with 12 for the Red Dragons.
Kyle Spence and Kyle Spence scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Tigers.
