AKRON — The Canfield High boys swimming team broke five school records and one meet record en route to a second place finish at Friday’s sectional meet at the University of Akron.
Akron Firestone was first, edging the Cardinals 348-324. Boardman placed seventh with 199.
Eric Davis swam in three winning relays and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly to lead the Cardinals, whose strong season continued into the tournament. Canfield’s boys and girls teams finished 14-0 during the regular season.
Ryan King, Gavin Trebilcock, Garrett Trebilcock and Davis won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.98 to break the old school record of 1:38.42. Boardman (Conner O’Halloran, Mike Barringer, Dewey Slagle, Tommy Slagle) was fourth with a time of 1:41.89.
Davis, Gavin Trebilcock, Ryan King and James Hunter combined to set a school and meet record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:27.79. The old meet record was 1:28.52. Boardman (O’Halloran, Jared Ebie, Tommy Slagle, Barringer) placed second.

Also, Hunter broke his own school record in winning the 100 free with a time of 47.36. The old mark was 47.85. Boardman senior Conner O’Halloran finished second (48.31). Hunter also broke his school record in the 200 free, with a time of 1:43.78. The old mark was 1:44.85.
The first two relays and the first three individuals in each event automatically qualify for next week’s district meet at Cleveland State University. Additional individuals and relays will qualify based on times from across the state.
Garrett Trebilcock placed first in the 200 IM (1:58.50) and his brother, Gavin, was fourth. In the 100 butterfly, Davis was second and Boardman’s Mike Barringer was third in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
O’Halloran won the 50 free (21.47) and King was second in the 100 backstroke (54.46). Boardman freshman Mike Henson placed sixth in the 100 back (57.51).
Division I and II girls will compete today.
“I was really pleased with how we swam, especially since we had a lot of guys coming off of illnesses,” said Canfield coach Andrea Linnelli. “It was great to see the relays come together as well as they did. They’re such a close group and they really wanted to get first. They really wanted to take down Akron. But it didn’t happen this time.
“If you take the diving out of it, we outswam them.”
