BOARDMAN — Eric Simione, head coach of the Boardman High School Speech and Debate Team, has been elected to the Ohio High School Speech League’s State Coaches Hall of Fame. Simione has coached speech at Boardman since 1990 and was named head coach in 1996. During his 12 years as program director, Boardman has had 274 students qualify for the state speech tournament. Of those, 40 reached the final round of competition and four were crowned state champions. Another 11 finished as runners-up.
As a team, Boardman has finished in the state tournament’s top 10 nine times, with a second-place finish in 2002.
Boardman has also had 41 students qualify to the national speech tournament during Simione’s tenure. The team has won a number of National Forensic League awards over the years.
Applications for academy
YOUNGSTOWN — Eagle Heights Academy is accepting open enrollment applications for the 2008-09 school year for grades K-8. Parents or guardians must apply in person. Children need not attend. Applications are available at the school at 1833 Market St. They may be filed between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily at the school. Eagle Heights will hold a kindergarten open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 14 and kindergarten early testing from 9 to 11 a.m. March 15. For more information, call the school at (330) 742-9090.
Struthers schools offer open enrollment
STRUTHERS — The school district will have open enrollment for the 2008-09 school year and applications must be picked up in person at the board office, 99 Euclid Ave., Feb. 25-29. No applications will be mailed. Completed applications must be returned in person to the board office beginning at 9 a.m. Feb. 26. The deadline for completing applications is 3 p.m. March 14. Applicants will receive written notice of the enrollment decision by the first full week in April. Any child living in the state of Ohio is eligible, but the program isn’t open to students who will be attending the Mahoning County Career & Technical Center for the first time. CCW Academy open house
CAMPBELL — CCW Academy, will hold its 34th annual open house from 10 a.m. to noon March 29. The preschool program offering full- and half-day programs for children ages 3 to 5, is at St. Joseph The Provider Church, 585 Sanderson Ave. An after-school program is also available for children in kindergarten through the sixth grade. AUSTINTOWN — Fitch High School will hold an information meeting for parents of incoming freshmen at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 in the school cafeteria. Incoming freshmen not currently attending an Austintown school should call the registration office at (330) 797-3900, ext. 1621, after Monday to enroll.

YOUNGSTOWN — Ursuline High School will hold parent-teacher conferences from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Teachers will be available in their classrooms to discuss student progress.
Naval seaman to speak
out against war in Iraq
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Jonathan Hutto, an active-duty U.S. seaman who openly opposes the war in Iraq, will speak at 6 p.m. Friday in Philips Lecture Hall of the Hoyt Science Resources Center. The event is free to the public and is sponsored by the Westminster College Peace Studies Program and Student Government Association. Hutto is permitted to speak against the war in Iraq on his personal time, out of uniform and off base. He and other service members, sponsored by antiwar military organizations, created a Web site (www.appealforredress.org) to provide a way for individual service members to appeal to their representatives and senators to urge an end to the war. Hutto received the 2007 Social Courage Award from the Peace and Justice Studies Association, an award given annually to an individual who exemplifies courage and honor in building a culture of peace and nonviolence in the face of political pressure and social struggle.
