Trumbull auditor says beware of paying high fees for deed copies

WARREN — Trumbull County Recorder Diana Marchese is warning the public of a company offering to provide a certified copy of their deed for $59 when her office charges $5.

Marchese said today that National Deed Service Inc. of Northbrook, Ill., is sending letters to property owners offering to provide the service.

“It’s just sad they’re taking advantage of people,” Marchese said.

The recorder explained that two residents were in the recorder’s office this week to get copies of their deed after receiving National Deed letters that also asks for a credit card number.

The letter does have a disclaimer that says many government records are available free or at a nominal cost.

A recording at the company phone says that National Deed is a private company that’s not affiliated with any government agencies. It says the company gets the names of potential customers from real estate mailing lists.
