Looking for an event to attend over the next week? Here are a few suggestions:

CANFIELD AT POLAND

OK, so the first game wasn’t as competitive as Canfield fans would have liked, but Cardinals coach John Cullen has had a month to dissect the film. The rematch is Friday night in what should be a sold-out Poland Fieldhouse. Canfield (15-2) hasn’t lost since that 87-72 Poland win Jan. 18, and has allowed more than 50 points in only one of those five games. The Bulldogs (17-0) keep rolling along; they’re outscoring conference opponents by almost 35 points per game.

GIRLS TOURNAMENTS

Granted, the new seeding system allows for more potential blowouts in the first round, but there’s still some intriguing matchups. Howland, for instance, is 17-3 and was moved from the Alliance sectional to Solon, where the Tigers will face some unfamiliar teams. Saturday there’s also triple-headers at Fitch and Hubbard to satisfy any hoop junkies.

SWIMMING AT AKRON

Area swimmers and divers get started on their attempts for state championships with the sectional meet at the University of Akron. The diving begins today with the swimmers taking over Friday and Saturday. Next weekend the qualifiers go to Cleveland State for the district, and the state meet returns to Canton Feb. 21-23.

NEWTON FALLS HOOPS

Earlier this week Newton Falls’ veteran boys basketball coach Roy Sembach said he was amazed his team — any team — could go unbeaten in the Trumbull Athletic Conference this season. Well, the Tigers are doing just that; they’ve won 11 straight, with games remaining against Girard (Friday), Lakeview (Feb. 12) and LaBrae (Feb. 15). If you haven’t seen them, the Tigers are worth catching the admission. They have two nice big men, a solid guard in Cameron McCleary and Sembach’s coaching acumen. The rematch with Lakeview — the Tigers won the in overtime on Jan. 18 — should be a dandy.

FEDERAL LEAGUE BASKETBALL

Speaking of basketball junkies, they’ll get their fill Saturday at the Federal League finals at the Canton Civic Center, starting with the Fitch-Lake matchup at 1 p.m. Boardman plays Massillon Jackson at 4, right before the championship showdown between Hoover and Massillon Perry.
