Audit report says Youngstown schools should cut 376 jobs

YOUNGSTOWN — A state performance audit has recommended that the city school district cut spending by some $17 million, primarily by eliminating 376 jobs.

Youngstown has been under state fiscal emergency since November 2006 when it began running a budget deficit that reached $15 million by the end of that fiscal year.

The audit from the Ohio Auditor of State says the financially strapped Youngstown City School District can reduce spending by more than $17 million by eliminating 376 jobs and making other internal changes in operations.

The district already has cut spending by some $19 million and cut several hundred jobs, and the audit released today recommends additional cuts be made across the board, targeting 26 administrative positions, 118 teachers as well as nurses, curriculum specialists, custodians, maintenance workers teacher aides, secretaries and more.
