Ex-NFL player to detail mistakes he made

YOUNGSTOWN — Clayton Holmes, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys, will speak Friday at the 11th annual Student Leadership Retreat in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.

The retreat begins at 9 a.m., and Clayton will speak about 10:25 a.m.

After his successes with the Cowboys, Clayton signed with the Miami Dolphins in 1996, but he was suspended for a year for violating the NFL’s drug policies and was later waived by the Dolphins.

After the NFL, Holmes’ life has been a mix of personal problems and financial difficulties. According to a recent ESPN.com feature, Holmes now lives in poverty in his hometown of Florence, S.C.

Holmes, who admits his mistakes and misbehavior in the article, said he doesn’t want others to wind up like him.

Greg Gulas, assistant director of student activities at YSU, said he read about Holmes and believes the man who had everything and then lost it has a story he can tell student leaders.

YSU chose to offer him his first opportunity to tell his story to a live audience, Gulas said.
