Township police remind residents to follow these tips that if they are ever the victim of or witness to an active burglary:

If you witness a burglary in progress, retreat to a safe distance and contact the police immediately. If you’re in the home where the burglary is occurring, if possible leave the home. If that is not possible, retreat to a room or closet with a cell phone and contact police immediately. In either case, stay on the phone with the police dispatcher and follow all instructions.

Make a mental note of both the suspect(s) and/or the suspect vehicle. Consider the number of suspect(s) and any physical description. If you observe a car, make, model, color and license plate are important items to note. In addition, any damage to the vehicle or other unique characteristics should be remembered.

If the suspect(s) leave before police arrive, remember the direction of travel.

Always consider your safety and the safety of others first. Take the time to follow the dispatcher’s instructions and be a good witness.
