“Welcome to the Captain” (8:30 p.m., CBS): This new sitcom is about the offbeat residents of a fabled Hollywood apartment building called the El Capitan. The cast includes Jeffrey Tambor as the resident know-it-all, and Raquel Welch as a seductive femme fatale.

“American Experience: Grand Central” (9 p.m., PBS): It’s not just an awe-inspiring structure, an engineering marvel and an indispensable resource. Grand Central Terminal was also a response to a human tragedy and a greedy railroad’s disregard for public safety. On the morning of January 8, 1902, a southbound commuter train traveling through a smoky, congested tunnel in New York City’s Grand Central Depot slammed into the rear of another train, instantly killing 15 people and injuring dozens. The tragedy (and resulting public outcry) ultimately gave rise to one of America’s greatest technological and artistic triumphs. But the trip was anything but smooth. A new film, “Grand Central,” takes viewers on this journey, providing both history and a tribute to this beloved transportation landmark.

“The New Adventures of Old Christine” (9:30 p.m., CBS): The ever-charming Julia Louis Dreyfus is back as “The New Adventures of Old Christine” launches its third season. The opener has Christine ready to consummate her relationship with Mr. Harris (Blair Underwood) — until a revelation from Barb gives her cold feet.
