In 1908, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Loewe v. Lawlor, rules the United Hatters Union has violated the Sherman Antitrust Act by organizing a nationwide boycott of Danbury Hatters of Connecticut. In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution, providing for a federal income tax, is ratified. In 1930, the chief justice of the United States, William Howard Taft, resigns for health reasons. (He dies just over a month later.) In 1943, during World War II, the U.S. transport ship Dorchester, which was carrying troops to Greenland, sinks after being hit by a German torpedo. (Four Army chaplains give their life belts to four other men, and go down with the ship.) In 1995, the space shuttle Discovery blasts off with a woman, Air Force Lt. Col. Eileen Collins, in the pilot’s seat for the first time in NASA history.

February 3, 1983: A powerful bomb damages the docks at the Interstate Motor Freight terminal in Jackson Township and local police investigate at least nine reports of shots fired at truck drivers as violence escalates in a strike by independent truckers.

NBC broadcaster Joe Garagiola is honored as the Man of the Year at the 6th annual sports banquet at the VIP in Niles. Among those attending are three major league managers, Tom Lasorda of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chuck Tanner of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Mike Ferraro of the Cleveland Indians. Close to 1,000 attend the event hosted by Sandy Petruso and Ray Travaglini, which raises scholarship money for Youngstown State University.

February 3, 1968: Pressure from roving bands of striking coal miners causes Ambrosia Coal and Construction Co. to close its six mines in Mercer and Lawrence counties.

Fire at the Penguin Bar at 1203 Salt Springs Road causes $25,000 in damage. The building was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

Directors of the Dollar Savings & Trust Co. of Youngstown declare a 100 percent dividend, President Carl W. Ullman announces. A new additional share of stock for each share owned will be mailed to owners of record.

February 3, 1933: Leo Davies, 2-year-old son of Paul Davies, executive secretary of the Youngstown YMCA, drowns in a pond after wandering away from his parents home on High Street in Canfield. The boy died despite being dragged from the pond by his dog and despite heroic efforts at resuscitation by his mother, Nerva Hughes Davies, a YWCA worker and Red Cross lifesaver.

Archbishop Edward A. Mooney, apostolic delegate to Japan, is sailing from Tokyo to San Francisco and will visit his hometown of Youngstown for two weeks before sailing for Rome.
