Cards Popovec passes 1,000 career rebounds in 68-38 win over Niles

NILES — Kate Popovec, a 6-foot-3 senior, scored 31 points and broke 1,000 rebounds for her career to lead the Canfield High girls basketball team to a 68-38 win over Niles Saturday in a Metro Athletic Conference game.

Popovec, who set the school career rebounding record last season as a junior with 781 (beating the record of 740), needed only one rebound Saturday to reach 1,000 career rebounds. She responded with 16 rebounds to give her 1,015.

Popovec, who will play at the University of Pittsburgh, also broke 1,000 career points in first game of this season, making her a member of the very-rare 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound club.

Bryanne Halfhill added 18 points for Canfield whose stingy defense held Niles to five points in the first quarter and eight in the second, as the Cardinals built a commanding 36-13 halftime lead.

Nina Gabrelcik sparked the Red Dragons (6-13, 2-11) with 12 points.

SALEM — Amy Scullion scored 19 points, pulled down seven rebounds, had six assists and three steals for the Quakers (12-6, 9-3) in the MAC contest. Brittany Ritchie added nine points.

Danielle Bell led the Red Devils (3-14, 1-11) with 12 points and she grabbed six rebounds.

STRUTHERS — The Wildcats (9-7, 5-5), ahead 26-20 at intermission, put the MAC game away with a 21-9 surge in the third quarter.

Dana Mathews scored 27 points for the Wildcats. Ashley Galbraith added 14.

Brittany Tomaselli led the Potters (9-7, 5-5) with 25 points.

POLAND — The Tigers held the Bulldogs to six points in the first quarter, three in the second and nine in the third in building a 48-18 lead.

Kelly Barzak scored 21 points, while Allie Airhart and Alexa Williams added 16 apiece for the Tigers (16-3, 12-2) in the MAC contest. Michelle Benson led the Bulldogs (4-14, 3-9) with 16 points.

MASSILLON — Fitch (6-13, 1-7) fell behind 37-19 by halftime and wasn’t able to catch up in the Federal League Tournament game.

The Falcons were paced by Rachel Rouan with 13 points and Kayla Hanuschak with 11.

Courtney Ingersall led Perry with 22 points. Lindsay Ehmer added 14.

YOUNGSTOWN — Macy Weber scored 25 points to lead Beaver Local in a non-conference game.

Sam Mobley added 12 points for the Beavers (12-8), who lead 28-23 at halftime.

ALLIANCE — The Warriors built a 46-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter, then put the Northeastern Buckeye Conference game away with a 17-7 surge.
