“Super Bowl XLII” (6 p.m., Fox): Are you ready for some football? It’s time once again for America’s day of gridiron gluttony — and the most-watched program of the year. The main story line this year is the New England Patriots’ historic quest to run the table, undefeated. Standing in their way are the New York Giants, who gave the Pats a spirited battle before losing 38-35 just a few weeks ago. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman provide the play-by-play, but not before hours upon hours of monotonous pre-game buildup.

“Miss Austen Regrets” (9 p.m., PBS): The Jane Austen love fest continues on “Masterpiece.” But this time it’s a poignant biography of the author herself, played by Olivia Williams. In “Miss Austen Regrets,” we learn that, while Austen penned many happy endings in her books, she had a difficult time finding romantic bliss in her real life.

“House” (10:15 p.m., Fox): The medical drama “House” has landed the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot and offers an episode guest-starring Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino. She plays a psychiatrist who becomes trapped at a South Pole research station and requires a diagnosis via webcam.
