Suspects arraigned in burglary
One of the suspects was the Canfield burglary victims’ cleaning woman.
CANFIELD — Three people who are charged in a daytime burglary Wednesday in the city were arraigned in county court here Friday.
One went back to the county jail and the other two posted bond, according to court bailiff Bob Rupp.
The three are charged with felonies, so they did not enter pleas. Their cases will eventually end up in county common pleas court.
Bond was set at $14,000 for John S. Douglas, 34, of Youngstown, who is charged with burglary and possession of criminal tools. He did not make bond after his arraignment.
Richard S. Cummings, 35, of Youngstown posted bond of $14,500. He is charged with complicity to burglary and possession of criminal tools.
Joann Douglas, 39, of Youngstown posted bond of $12,500. She is charged with complicity to burglary.
The three are charged in a burglary on Bradford Drive. Homeowner Darlene DeChellis came home unexpectedly and surprised John Douglas inside, then chased him to his getaway car where Cummings was waiting behind the wheel, police said.
DeChellis flagged down a car, driven by a 17-year-old boy, and they chased Douglas and Cummings. She relayed their route to police by calling 911 on her cell phone, and the two were eventually caught at Hilltop Boulevard and Montgomery Drive.
Joann Douglas is John Douglas’ sister-in-law, police said. Joann Douglas, who was the DeChellises’ cleaning woman and knew their routines, helped John Douglas and Cummings plan the burglary, police said.
All three suspects were given court-appointed lawyers, Rupp said. Their preliminary hearings are set for 9 a.m. Friday in the county court here.
