United ties Raiders atop Tier One; Leetonia stays in first in Tier Two

NEW WATERFORD — The United High girls basketball team built a 36-22 lead after three quarters en route to a 54-37 victory over Crestview in an Inter Tri-County League Tier One game on Thursday.

Courtney Baker scored 16 points to lead the Golden Eagles (14-4, 11-2), who moved into a tie for first place in the league due to South Range’s loss to Lisbon.

Hillary Hoppell added 13 points and Lauren Rockhold finished with nine and she grabbed 11 rebounds.

Chelsea Bowker paced the Rebels (12-7, 7-6) with 14 points.

Springfield 50,
Mineral Ridge 21

NEW MIDDLETOWN — The Tigers rushed out to a 20-2 lead in the first quarter and took commanding 34-8 lead at intermission.

Brittany Chamberlain and Rachel Kennedy paced Springfield (6-13, 4-9) with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Heather Rinehart sparked the Rams (1-17, 0-13) with 12 points.

Columbiana 48,
East Palestine 35

EAST PALESTINE — Katie Witmer had 16 points and Katie Douglas 13 as the Clippers took advantage of East Palestine’s poor start.

Senior guard Logan Guy had 12 points for East Palestine (5-13, 2-11), which was 0 of 13 from the field and 2 of 6 from the foul line in the first quarter.

Earlier in the season, Columbiana also beat the Bulldogs, 44-31.

Leetonia 43,
Wellsville 28

WELLSVILLE — The Bears (15-3, 12-1) remain in a tie with McDonald for first place in ITCL Tier Two standings.

The Bears built a 33-24 lead by the end of the third quarter. Sarah Weikart paced Leetonia with 10 points. Brittany Bissell, who made four 3-point baskets, led the Tigers (5-14, 4-8) with 13 points.

Lowellville 80,
Jackson-Milton 45

NORTH JACKSON — Lowellville senior Ali Grapevine scored 14 of her 30 points in the first quarter as the Rockets took a 26-11 lead.

Krissy Meehan scored 14 points and Jamie Hynes added nine points for Lowellville (10-9, 9-4). Grapevine had 11 rebounds.

Alyssa Chine scored 30 points and added three steals for the Bluejays (3-15, 2-11).

Warren Harding 76,
Warren JFK 29

WARREN — Kortney Williams scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Harding (13-5, 3-1 Steel Valley Conference), which took a 10-2 first quarter lead and never trailed.

Kamela Bender added 14 points, five assists and four steals, while Jasmine Kirkland had 13 points and four blocks and Aundrea Baldridge added eight rebounds.

Marisa Nocera had 10 points for the Eagles (2-17, 0-4).

Brookfield 63,
Champion 31

CHAMPION — Morgan Bonekovic had 16 points and Kodi Brenner 14 to lead the Warriors (16-2, 11-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference).

Champion trailed by nine at halftime before Brookfield outscored the Golden Flashes, 30-7, in the second half.

Heather Beachy and Erika Stevens each had eight points for Champion (1-17, 1-11).

Newton Falls 77, Girard 45

NEWTON FALLS — Kelsey McGregor scored 28 points, including 22 in the first half, as Newton Falls rolled past Girard.

The Tigers (9-9, 6-6 TAC) led 41-20 at halftime.

Chelsea Guerrieri paced Girard (1-17, 1-11) with 13 points.

Hubbard 56,
Lakeview 52

CORTLAND — The Eagles (10-8, 8-4) held a 32-21 lead at intermission, then held on as the Bulldogs (6-12, 4-8) outscored Hubbard 31-24 in the second half.

Cara Julian paced the Eagles with 21 points. Michelle Starkey chipped in with 11 and Brittany Bullock had 10.

Joanna Novotny led Lakeview with 21 points and she had three assists and four steals. Emily Malmisur added 15 and she and Jessica Downs pulled down nine rebounds apiece.

Mathews 43,
Lordstown 36

LORDSTOWN — The Red Devils (10-8, 4-5), behind 25-13 at intermission, battled back to get within 30-26 heading into the final eight minutes, but the Mustangs (10-8, 7-3) won with a 13-10 effort in the Northeastern Athletic Conference contest.

Carly Rosco sparked the Mustangs with 15 points.. Kelsey Wickline and Brianna Blodgett scored 13 and 11 points respectively for the Red Devils. Blodgett pulled down 4 of 17 rebounds. Lindsey Harrison had three assists and Kelsey Wickline four steals.
