Man charged in assault of infant

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) — A man was charged with assaulting an 11-day-old infant, fracturing the baby’s arm, leg, skull and nose, police said Thursday.

The baby was being held by his grandmother, Mary St. Clair, when she was attacked by Jeremy Smith, 31, Somerset police said. During the argument, Smith tried to grab the infant, failed and continued to beat St. Clair, police said.

Smith has been in Somerset County Jail since Jan. 1 for allegedly assaulting St. Clair, his live-in girlfriend. Authorities didn’t become aware that the boy had been injured until he was treated Wednesday in the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for an unrelated medical problem.
