YOUNGSTOWN — The AARP and the Mahoning County Senior Center, 1110 Fifth Ave., will be offering free tax preparation to those age 60 and older. Free tax preparation services will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday and Friday, Feb. 4 through April 11. You must bring all current and pertinent tax forms with you. Children’s History Club
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Historical Center, 151 W. Wood St., will have its Children’s History Club between noon and 3 p.m. Feb. 9. The program is called “The Depression Era.” Young historians discover the Depression era by being a steelworker trying to “make ends meet” and a corporate board member who must make difficult business decisions. History Club is for young historians between the ages of 8 and 12. A snack is provided. Advance registration is required. Call (330) 743-5934. The cost of the program is $10 for Ohio Historical Society members and $12 for all others.
Coitsville trustees
COITSVILLE — Coitsville Township trustees elected Phyllis Johnson as chairwoman and Gerald Backo vice chairman. They will have their regular meetings at the Coitsville Town Hall on the third Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m., with a study session beginning at 5:30 p.m., excluding the months of July and August. They will also have study sessions on the first Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. and on the third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. during July and August. Trustees reappointed Randy Partika to a five-year term on the zoning board of appeals, and Greg Haren was reappointed to a five-year term on the zoning commission.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown city schools will have parent information nights on the district’s open-enrollment program under which parents can request that their child be allowed to attend a city school other than the school that serves their home area of the city. Sessions are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at East High School auditorium, 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chaney High School auditorium and 10 a.m. Thursday at the central office dining room at 20 W. Wood St. Enrollment applications will be available at the meetings or at Room 110 at the central office building. Feb. 29 is the deadline.
Robbery at motel
NILES — A 27-year-old Warren man claims he was robbed of $6,500 while visiting at the 422 Motel, 5318 Youngstown Road. The man told police he and another man were in a motel room late Wednesday evening drinking beer when two other men entered the room and all three jumped him, beat him and took the cash from his pocket.
Hunter’s death probed
ROGERS — The Columbiana County coroner’s office is investigating the death of a hunter who fell out of a tree stand while bow hunting on his own property. The body was found about 9:23 p.m. Wednesday. The property is about two miles west of Rogers on state Route 154. Brian Fullum, the coroner’s investigator, said he could not identify the victim pending notification of relatives, and because the investigation is ongoing.
Vacant house burglary
WARREN — A burglar made sure he had eaten before stealing tools from a vacant house. The owner of the Cherry Street house he was repairing so he could rent it told police Wednesday that a burglar broke into the house, ate a Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner and drank some liquor before taking the tools from the basement. Police pointed out they know the burglary occurred Sunday because the receipt for the dinner paid with a credit card was left behind in the house.
Man shot in back
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — An Edinburg man was shot in the back during a drug deal gone bad, city police said. The 28-year-old man told police he came to the city to buy drugs and met up Wednesday night with two men on Erie Street. The victim told police the men demanded all his cash and showed a gun. The victim refused and ran off, police said. Police said the man was shot in the back as he ran. His condition was unknown late Thursday. He was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment.
