County to rescind funding criterion

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Lawrence County commissioners say they intend to rescind a measure requiring municipalities be part of the countywide council of governments in order to receive funding for transportation projects.

The county regularly gives out its excess liquid fuels funding, money derived locally from state fuel taxes that can only be used for transportation projects.

Before Tuesday, there were no requirements to receive the funds other than commissioner approval.

Commissioner Steve Craig said Thursday they received complaints after passing the measure that a community must be a member of COG to receive the money.

Only three municipalities are not members of the county council of governments.

Craig said they now intend to come up with a list of other requirements that could include the funding be used for duel community projects and other things.

Commissioners said they do not know when the new requirements will be ready for a vote.
