SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Eric Devendorf and Andy Rautins both hit three 3-pointers in a six-minute span to key a stirring first-half surge, and Syracuse beat Seton Hall in the Big East opener for both teams. Rautins, who tied a school record with nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points in the Orange’s previous game against Coppin State, was 7-for-10 from beyond the arc and finished with 26 points. Devendorf, 3-for-6 from long range, finished with 20 points. Jeremy Hazell led Seton Hall with 23 points, while Robert Mitchell had 22 and Eugene Harvey 13. The Pirates (9-4) had rallied to win three times after trailing at halftime, but the Orange’s 54-35 lead on their highest first-half total of the season was too much.
No. 20 Clemson 98, South Carolina 87
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Terrence Oglesby had six 3-pointers and scored 25 points and Clemson improved to 13-0 for the second time in three seasons. They were able to take a winning streak into the new year by surviving the Gamecocks’ second-half rally. South Carolina (9-2) cut Clemson’s 18-point lead to seven in the final minute. However, K.C. Rivers got free underneath for a basket, and Oglesby hit a free throw after Gamecocks first-year coach Darrin Horn was called for a technical.
