Kiwanians to participate in First Night Canfield
CANFIELD — Members of Kiwanis of Western Mahoning County will participate in the First Night Canfield celebration as they sell food and beverages tonight in the cafeteria of Canfield High School,
The guest speaker at the organization’s recent meeting was Don Augenstein, CPA, who discussed tax changes that will take effect beginning in 2009 and tax planning.
Augenstein was born and raised in Warren and graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He passed the CPA exam in 1984, and in 1987 started his own firm, Augenstein, Gabriele and Mapes, CPA, LLC., where he serves as president. He has lived in Canfield since 1997, is a member of Kiwanis, and has been active in the community for many years.

Awards presented by Dahlia Society
CANFIELD — During an annual holiday dinner on Dec. 12 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield, the Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society presented its President’s Award to Harriet Chandler for her continued support and work for the society. Chuck Willet, who offered a special tribute to Jim Chuey and Randy Foith, was the recipient of the organization’s Crushed Dahlia Award .
The program included vocal selections by Kassie Simpson of Boardman.
On Feb. 8, the society will resume regular monthly meetings at the Davis Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek MetroParks with Randy Foith as president; Kathy Foith, vice president; Joyce Habeger, secretary; Dave Habeger, treasurer; and Harriet Chandler, membership chairman.
Dream Team to host MLK Day breakfast
WARREN — The cafeteria of Warren G. Harding High School will be the setting at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 19 for the 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Breakfast and program to be hosted by the Trumbull County Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Team.
The nonprofit charitable organization dedicates the event to preserving the historic achievements of Dr. King, who won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964. It is an effort to generate a united community effort to remember, celebrate and inspire action in keeping the dream alive.
The featured speaker will be the Rev. Dr. John Newby Jr., the pastor of the Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church in Warren and an associate professor emeritus at Bowling Green University, where he has been on the faculty and administrative staff for 25 years.
The breakfast will be catered by the Saratoga Restaurant, and the cost is $15 per person. Tables for 10 will be available for $125.

Bridal show to take place at the MetroPlex
GIRARD — A third annual bridal show will take place Sunday at the MetroPlex, 1620 Motor Inn Drive. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.
The show will feature more than 40 businesses specializing in wedding services. Prizes include $5,000 sponsored by Fab Limo, a honeymoon stay at Hidden Mountain Resort in Tennessee from Lucille’s Lake Front Cottages, one year his-and-hers membership from the Body Shop, a large screen TV, plus thousands of dollars in prize giveaways.
Some of the vendors featured are Treasured Moments Bridal, American Commodore Tuxedo, Casal’s De Spa and Salon, Macy’s, Fifth Season Catering, and T&R Party Rentals.
