Inmate stabs guard at East Side prison

YOUNGSTOWN (AP) — Officials say a maximum-security inmate made a weapon and stabbed a guard several times at the Ohio State Penitentiary off Coitsville-Hubbard Road on the city’s East Side.

Andrea Carson, an Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman, said the injuries the guard suffered in the Tuesday incident are not life-threatening.

The guard is receiving hospital treatment in a city hospital, and the inmate was placed in isolation.

Officials did not release the guard’s identity or the identity of the inmate. They also did not provide details on the weapon.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol in Trumbull County is handling the investigation, but troopers were not available to comment at press time.

Warren family robbed at gunpoint at home

WARREN — A Forest Street Northeast couple and their four children were robbed at gunpoint by four men at 11 p.m. Monday as they returned home from a trip to the grocery store.

The couple told police four men wearing black and gray hoodies ran from around the house and brandished handguns, forced the family into the house and said to “give them the stuff.”

Three of the four men kept repeating that they wanted “the stuff” and pointing handguns at the father. They took him to his bedroom, ransacked it but found nothing, then left after taking the man’s wallet and some cash out of his pants. The robbers also took cell phones and car keys.

Before leaving, one of the men sprayed a chemical irritant, which caused the woman and children to cough with a slight burning sensation on their faces. None of the victims required medical treatment.

The couple reported hearing no gunshots, but neighbors said they heard gunshots coming from outside the home.
