Dog suffers enclosure with others, box gluing

The dog sustained only some scratches, but the assistant dog warden called the abuse ‘really cruel.’

YOUNGSTOWN — No arrests have been made and there are no significant leads to an animal abuse incident here Tuesday.

Dave Nelson, assistant Mahoning County dog warden, rescued a young male dog in the 400 block of Clearmont Avenue on the city’s South Side.

The dog, which Nelson said appears to be a small cocker spaniel, had a box glued to its head and then was placed into an enclosed area with pit bulls.

Sometimes dogs get buckets and things stuck on their head, but what happened to the rescued dog was a human act that Nelson called “really cruel.”

Neighbors in the area heard some commotion, then yelps from the dog, and called the dog warden office, Nelson said.

“That’s something that can’t be tolerated,” he said of the incident, noting that he will go back to the Clearmont Avenue location again today to talk to area residents.

Nelson contacted a local veterinarian office that was closed by the time he called, so he took the dog home to cut the box and remove as much glue as possible from the dog.

The dog suffered only some scratches and appeared to have no serious external injuries, he said.

“He’s just a beautiful, well-tempered dog,” Nelson said.
