Pair win sprint titles

WEST ALLIS, Wis. — Heather Richardson and Shani Davis won their first sprint national titles Tuesday, the final day of the U.S. Long Track Speedskating National Championships.

Richardson of High Point, N.C., repeated Monday’s sweep in the 500- and 1,000-meter races at Pettit National Ice Center.

The four-day competition determined national championships and slots on the U.S. winter World Cup team. The trials to decide the U.S. team for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics will be at this site in October.

Soccer roster picked

CHICAGO — U.S. men’s soccer coach Bob Bradley has named 25 players to the training camp roster that will begin workouts Jan. 4 at the team’s national training center in Carson, Calif.

The group will begin preparing for its first game of 2009, an exhibition against Sweden on Jan. 24 at The Home Depot Center in Carson.

“This is the beginning of a big year for the national team, and it is important that we get started off heading in the right direction,” said Bradley. “This is another great opportunity to reinforce the principles of how this team operates both on and off the field, as well as getting players ready for the match against Sweden.”

Sony Open missing Hawaii’s 2 teens

HONOLULU — Paul Goydos once joked that he made PGA Tour history in 2007 by winning the Sony Open as the first player to beat a field that included a 5-foot boy (Tadd Fujikawa) and a 6-foot girl (Michelle Wie).

If Goydos wins at Waialae next month, it could be against a field that doesn’t include either of Hawaii’s most famous golfing teens.

Tournament director Ray Stosik said Wie, now a 19-year-old student at Stanford, would not be playing the Sony Open for the second straight year. Wie was in Palm Desert, Calif., practicing and getting ready for her next school quarter. Wie played her hometown PGA Tour event four straight years, and twice shot 68 although she never made the cut.

Catcher Raul Chavez and infielder Randy Ruiz also joined the Blue Jays.

The 32-year-old Barrett hit .202 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 30 games with San Diego. He has played 11 seasons in the majors with Montreal, the Chicago Cubs and the Padres.

Fight is reviewed

PANAMA CITY — The WBA is reviewing Nikolai Valuev’s win over Evander Holyfield by majority decision in a Dec. 20 heavyweight title bout.

The organization says in a statement on its Web site dated Monday that it has ordered a panel of judges to study the video of the fight. The WBA says it “always cares about and respects the fans’ and the media’s opinion.”

One judged scored the bout in Switzerland a draw while the others had Valuev winning 116-112 and 115-114. The 46-year-old Holyfield was attempting to become the oldest heavyweight to win a major belt.

Aston Villa wins

LONDON — Aston Villa won 1-0 at Hull on Tuesday, moving into fourth place in the Premier League on an own-goal by Kamil Zayatte in the 88th minute.

In the day’s only game in the top division, the lone goal came when Zayatte inadvertently volleyed Ashley Young’s cross beyond his own goalkeeper while under pressure from Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Aston Villa and defending champion Manchester United have 38 points, but Man United has played two fewer games. Liverpool leads with 45 points, followed by Chelsea with 42.

The game ended in confusion when referee Steve Bennett changed his mind after appearing to award Hull a penalty kick deep into injury time. Young seemed to have handled Ian Ashbee’s header on the goal line.
