Area colleges Tuesday’s games

MEN

Emory & Henry 104, Westminster 84

MARIETTA — Junior forward Ryne Murray scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting while also pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds to lead Westminster (1-11) in the consolation game of the 38th Annual Marietta Shrine Tournament hosted by Marietta College. Murray has now posted a double-double in points and rebounds four times this season. Other double-figure scorers for Westminster included freshman forward Rob Briggs with 14 points, followed by sophomore guard Max Spinner with 13 and junior center Steve Bielich with 10. Five Emory & Henry players — two starters — scored in double figures including Josh Brown coming off the bench to post team-best marks of 20 points, 14 rebounds and three steals. The Wasps (6-5) shot 57 percent from the field.

Defiance 93, Geneva 79

DEFIANCE — Brandon Harvey scored 23 points and Dave Phillips had 20 points and seven rebounds for Geneva (2-7), which fell behind by 10 at halftime and couldn’t recover. For Defiance (7-4), Nick Sales scored 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Anthony Brown had 17 points and Kevin Tietje scored 11 off the bench.

Kean 76, Thiel 57

WOOSTER — Junior guard Nick Sefscik led Thiel College in scoring for the second game in a row, but it wasn’t enough for the Tomcats to pull out a win in the second round of the “Mose” Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic at the College of Wooster. The 76-57 setback closed the book on an 0-5 December for the Thiel men’s basketball squad. Sefscik, who scored 21 on Monday, tallied a game-high-tying 19 points in the contest, earning him a spot on the all-tournament team. Jonathan Jones also scored 19 to lead the Cougars. Kean held a significant 41-25 advantage in rebounds, including 17 on the offensive glass. Kean registered 15 second-chance points in the contest. Senior forward Keebo Dowe pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. The loss was the seventh in a row for Thiel (1-9).

Grove City 74, Ohio State-Lima 42

BLUFFTON — A 19-day layoff didn’t seem to hurt Grove City, which rolled to victory in semifinals of Bluffton College’s McDonald’s Holiday Tournament at Founders Hall. Grove City (6-2) limited Ohio State-Lima to just 21 percent (13 of 62) shooting from the field. Junior center Andy O’Keefe led Grove City with 15 points while sophomore center Kris Verderber added 11 points in 14 minutes off the bench.
