Mount Union topples Kean in tournament opener 78-70

WOOSTER — Chris Switzer scored 29 points to lead Mount Union over Kean (N.J.), 78-70, in the opening game of the Mose Hole/Kiwanis Tournament. The Purple Raiders (9-1) won their fourth straight game. Jay Mathis added 14 points for Mount Union, while Dave Pellerite had 12 and Sam King (Brookfield) finished with 10 assists and seven rebounds. Michael Oglesby had 13 points and 14 rebounds off the bench to lead Kean (4-6).
Wooster 82, Thiel 63
WOOSTER — Drew Sawyer came off the bench to lead Wooster with 18 points in the nightcap of the Mose Hole/Kiwanis Tournament. Nathan Balch added 16 points, while Greg Ross scored 10 for the Scots (6-4), who will play Mount Union in the championship game tonight. Nick Sefscik of Thiel (1-8) led all scorers with 21 points and he had a team-best five rebounds. Keebo Dowe added 15 points and Cory Chaffee finished with six assists.
Calvin (Mich.) 91, Geneva 65
DEFIANCE — Dustin Smith scored 18 points and Tim Katt had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Calvin in the opening round of the Defiance College Tournament. Matt Veltema added 12 points and Caleb Veldhouse scored 11 for Calvin (4-5), which led 49-41 at halftime. Geneva (2-6) was paced by Richard Colick with 15 points, Brandon Harvey with 10 points and Dave Phillips with six rebounds.
Guilford (N.C.) 73, Hiram 70
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Chris Roberts was three assists shy of recording a triple double, finishing with 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, to lead Hiram. (6-4). Andrew Wiegand also scored 17 points for Hiram, going 5-for-9 on 3-pointers. Deon Milton added 14 points and Glenn Campbell scored 10. Clay Henson led Guilford (7-2) with 19 points, while George Neville added 18 points and Rhett Bonner 14. Tyler Sanborn had seven points and 12 rebounds.
Marietta 77, Westminster 63
MARIETTA — Bobby Glass (Neshannock) led the Titans with 12 points in the opening night of the Marietta Shrine Tournament. Ryne Murray added 11 points and seven rebounds for Westminster (1-10), which will play Emory & Henry tonight in the consolation game. Louie Pisani added a career-high 11 points for the Titans and Max Spinner finished with 10. Joe Puch led the Pioneers (5-5) with 21 points, while Kevin Knab added 16 and Trevor Halter and Daun Lutes each scored 14.

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Westminster had a 16-point lead evaporate in the last 51‚Ñ2 minutes but hung on to defeat Wooster, 62-60.
Westminster (3-6) led 60-44 with 5:28 remaining in the game before Wooster stormed back and nearly won the game at the buzzer. Meredith Wilson attempted a 3-pointer from the right wing for the Scots with three seconds remaining, but her attempt was blocked by Westminster’s Amy Dolsak (McDonald). Dolsak led Westminster with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and a team-high 12 rebounds. Emily Dolsak (McDonald) and Gina Brunetti (Mooney) added 14 points each and Kaitlin McCarthy (Lowellville) finished with 10 points and seven assists. Kym Wenz led Wooster (3-5) with 18 points.
