Griswold leads Mooney past Central Catholic


The senior standout scored a career-high 19 points in a 51-45 victory.

YOUNGSTOWN — Senior Katie Griswold scored a career-high 19 points to lead Cardinal Mooney to a 51-45 victory over Canton Central Catholic in a girls non-league basketball game Monday night.

Griswold scored nine points in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals (3-5) pulled away from a 35-32 lead.

Dominique Zordich added 12 points for Mooney and Katie Hughes scored 11.

Courtney Nicholson led Central Catholic (1-9) with 11 points.

East Palestine 43, Youngstown Christian 32

EAST PALESTINE — Bre Hull scored 16 points and Kali George had 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead East Palestine.

Hull and George also finished with three assists each for the Bulldogs (2-5), who led 24-15 at halftime.

Sara Bell scored 11 points to lead Youngstown Christian (1-7).

United 46, Rootstown 39

ROOTSTOWN — Maggie Sell scored 17 points as the Golden Eagles prevailed in a battle of unbeaten teams in the championship game of the Rootstown Holiday Tournament.

Ruth Prosko added eight points for United (8-0), which outscored the Rovers (6-1) 10-5 in the fourth quarter.

Lauren Hughes had 15 points for Rootstown.

Howland 56, GlenOak 43

CANTON — Kelly Barzak had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead Howland, which remained undefeated.

Erika Nites added 13 points and five assists for the Tigers (7-0), while Megan Long contributed six points and five assists.

Nancy Osborne and Kyndall Holly each had 10 points for GlenOak.

Liberty 56, Campbell 47

LIBERTY — Vekelya Merriweather had 14 points while Ashley Venable and Chakieyla Merriweather added 11 apiece to spark LIberty (4-5).

Lesha Moses had 18 points and Jayaira Grhim 13 to pace Campbell, which had a 21-20 goal edge but was only 2-for-12 at the foul line.

Columbiana 58, Erie East 51

BROOKFIELD — Hayley Goist tossed in 21 points, while Katie Witmer and Ashley Shea added 16 and 15 points respectively and pulled down nine rebounds as Columbiana improved to 6-2.

The Clippers will meet host Brookfield in the tournament championship game tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Newton Falls 63, Springfield 55

NEWTON FALLS — Newton Falls jumped out to a big lead than held off a fourth-quarter rally by Springfield to improve to 7-2 on the year.

Kelsey McGregor led the Tigers with 25 points while Destiny Prusky added 19. Springfield was led by Andria Lyons with 18 points and Ashley Davis added 13.

Lisbon 43, Western Reserve 31

LISBON — Lisbon (7-0) remained unbeaten with a solid defensive performance holding Western Reserve (2-6) to just 20 points over the final three quarters.

Mindy Jackson led the Blue Devils with a 20 point effort while Megan Reynolds added 13. Jackson also had 15 rebounds and Reynolds added three steals.

South Range 48, Chaney 37

NORTH LIMA — South Range (6-3) held Chaney to just 10 first half points then coasted to victory.

Sara Smith paced the Raiders with 13 points, while Alyssa Sykes led Chaney with 16, while Marcinde North added 14.

Warren JFK 46, Lowellville 43

WARREN — Paige Klaric’s two foul shots with about 1:00 left gave Warren JFK a 44-43 lead, and then Kelsie Massacci’s steal and goal provided insurance for the Eagles.

Massacci stole the ball at the top of the Lowellville key with about 17 seconds left, and then drove in for the insurance layup.

Klaric finished with 18 points to lead JFK while Stephanie Cervi had 10 rebounds.

Jamie Hynes had 15 points to lead Lowellville while Ashley Moore had 12 and Chelsea Marrie six rebounds.

Lordstown 49, Sebring 34

LORDSTOWN — Lindsey Harrison scored 15 points and Kelsey Wickline backed her up with 14 points to lead Lordstown (7-3).

Maggie Householder hit for 12 points for the Trojans who trailed 25-15 at the break.

Boys

SALINEVILLE — Ethan Blatch had nine points, all on 3-point goals, while Trey Griffith also scored nine points to lead Southern (5-2) past East Liverpool Christian, 58-16.

Southern opened a 24-2 lead after the first quarter and led 41-4 at the intermission.
