Dog dies in West Side fire

YOUNGSTOWN — The occupants made it out OK but a small dog perished in a house fire on Manchester Avenue on the West Side, the fire department said.

The fire at 1:20 a.m. Sunday appeared to have started in the basement rafters. The breakers had tripped so electric was shut off at the box.

Damage was estimated at $9,000 to the property and contents.

Mother on house arrest

YOUNGSTOWN — The mother of five children who was not at home when someone set their porch on fire was placed on electronically monitored house arrest after being arraigned last week on child endangering charges.

Tradel Pollard, 23, of Pasadena Avenue, is due back in municipal court Jan. 9 for a pretrial hearing.

Pollard, who came home about 15 minutes after firefighters arrived on the scene last Tuesday night, told them her dog had gotten loose and she had been searching for the animal.

Her children, ages 3 to 8, were treated for smoke inhalation, the fire department said.

2 placed on probation

MERCER, Pa. — Judges in Mercer County Common Pleas Court placed two Mahoning County residents on probation for crimes they committed in Pennsylvania.

Dene Montgomery, 29, of West Earle Avenue, Youngstown, received two years’ probation for possessing firearms without a license and possessing drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

On March 28, he was apprehended in a motor vehicle on a Pa. Route 60 ramp in Shenango Township with a concealed, loaded firearm. He also had in his possession a digital scale and several small plastic bags.

Ryan Rice, 21, of Orchard Hill Road, Canfield, received two years’ probation and was ordered to make restitution for theft by unlawful taking, a misdemeanor.

On April 18 or 19, he took a PlayStation 3, four games and two wireless controllers from a Jefferson Avenue, Sharon, address.
