The science series “NOVA” explores that topic with “Is There Life on Mars?” and brings in the freshest discoveries from recent NASA missions to the red planet.

“The 31st Annual Kennedy Center Honors” (9 p.m., CBS): Barbra Streisand will be feted at “The 31st Annual Kennedy Center Honors” for her “contributions to American culture.” Apparently, they overlooked “Yentl.” Other honorees include Morgan Freeman, George Jones, Twyla Tharp, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey.

“According to Jim” (9:30 p.m., ABC): “According to Jim,” which offers a fresh episode tonight, is the Energizer bunny of sitcoms. It just goes on and on and on. ... And we’re as confounded as you are.
