White House reception: Laura Bush welcomed artists to a White House reception Dec. 2. Parks and her husband attended; Drumm said he was unable to attend. “About 200 artists were there,” Parks said. “We had our photos taken in front the tree in the Blue Room.”

Parks also related that the three-hour reception was in the state dining room, where a buffet stretched the length of the room. “It was lavish,” she said. “I loved the cheesy grits.”

She also said she kept wondering “who sat on these chairs before me” because so many dignitaries are entertained at the White House. “We were treated like dignitaries,” she said. Parks also said the White House decorations were “very simple but very elegant.”

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” Parks said.
